The Learning Channel (TLC) filmed an episode of "My First Home" in the Ballantyne Area of South Charlotte. This episode was first shown on April 10th and is being televised as a re-run during the 1010 season. The episode featured Elaine Eschert and one of her first time home buyers.
Located just south of Charlotte’s I-485 Beltway is Ballantyne, commonly referred to, as the “Ballantyne Area” of South Charlotte. This area offers an outstanding location and demographics with a short commute to uptown Charlotte, which is only 14 miles away. Several major transportation corridors and multiple interchanges along the
I-485 Beltway serve the Ballantyne area. These provide for easy access to I-85, I-77, downtown, the airport, major business centers and the South Park area.
At the heart of the Ballantyne area is the 2,000-acre Ballantyne master planned community, which consists of commercial, retail, residential, recreational, and resort areas. Its crossroads at Ballantyne Commons Parkway and Johnston Road is the site of four monuments, dedicated by the developer to the city. Each monument towering more than 30 feet, tell the history of the Charlotte area and the people who built it. To travel through Ballantyne’s landscaped streetscapes and see the developer’s attention to detail in architecture, plantings, lighting and signage is to appreciate the pride that has been exercised in developing this community. Luxury Hotel and Amenities
The crown jewel is the Ballantyne Hotel which is a member of the Starwood “Luxury Collection.” This affiliation places Ballantyne Hotel in an elite league of less than one hundred upper-end hotels worldwide including St.Regis Hotels, the Palace in San Francisco and the Phoenician in Scottsdale.
Located at the corner of Ballantyne Commons and Johnston Road, Ballantyne Hotel features 214 rooms including 18 suites and 2 Presidential Suites. Guests can enjoy dining in the Gallery Restaurant and Bar while enjoying a view of the golf course from the veranda. Also available to guests are the exercise area with fitness equipment, indoor grotto pool, two endless lap pools, whirlpool, sauna, tennis courts and a private outdoor "South Beach" pool. Ballantyne Hotel provides 20,000 square feet of meeting space on two levels with 18 meeting rooms and a 6,5000 square foot “Grand Ballroom”.
Lodge at Ballantyne
Additional meeting space is available at the Lodge at Ballantyne a rustic hunting lodge set just across the fairway from the hotel This unique facility offers 40,000 square feet and is ideal for private corporate retreats, wedding receptions and family reunions.
ALOFT at Ballantyne
The aloft is a new urban concept hotel that provides travelers with a unique lodging experience. One of which is the wxyz lounge with relax seating areas for conversations, pool table for entertainment and a very friendly bar. The aloft is located on Ballantyne Corporate Place next to the Lodge at Ballantyne.
Spa at Ballantyne
Inside the hotel is the 20,000 square foot Spa at Ballantyne that is also open to the public. It offers pool, massage, hydrotherapy, aroma therapy, wraps, facials, manicures, pedicures, and full service salon and a spa boutique.
Ballantyne Hotel Golf Course
This Five Star 18-hole, par 71 course was recognized by the North Carolina Magazine in 1998 as the “Best New Course” which placed it in the same league as Pinehurst #8 at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club. In addition to the course there is a driving range, putting green and a well stocked pro-shop.
Dana Rader Golf School
Located between the first and eighteenth fairways is the world famous Dana Rader Golf School was ranked by Golf Magazine as one of the top 25 schools in the nation. Dana Rader has been ranked as one of the top 50 golf instructors in the United States. Dana was the LPGA “teacher of the Year” in 1990 and in 2003 she achieved the LPGA Master Professional designation. She is also the author of the book, Rock Solid Golf. Her staff includes several teachers with impressive playing and teaching resumes. Her school offers a wide range of programs including a pee wee program.
Shopping
The Ballantyne area offers a wide range of shopping destinations including Ballantyne Village, Ballantyne Commons, StoneCrest at Piper Glen, Blakeney, the Promenade, Carolina Place Mall, Arboretum, Centrum Center, Torington and Hunters Crossing to name just a few. Here you will most of the major national retailers along with numerous local specialty stores.
Located 20 minutes away from the area are Morrocroft Village, Phillips Place and “SouthPark” where you will find stores like Neiman Marcus, Nordstrums, Macys, Belk, Dillards, Hermes, Kate Spade, Tommy Bahama, Polo Ralph Lauren, Burberry, BCBG, Taffany, Louis Vuitton, St. Johns and many others.
Dining
There is a wide variety of family and specialty dining opportunities throughout the area. They range from popular fast food establishments to some of the city’s most notable upscale restaurants. Recently Charlotte was named to the “Top 50 Cities That Sizzle” by Nation’s Restaurant News Magazine.
Some favorites are the Gallery Restaurant and Bar at the Ballantyne Resort, The Village Bistro, Villa Antonio, 131 Main, Cheese Cake Factory, Mortons, McCormick & Schmicks, Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House, M5, Maggiano’s Little Italy, Nobles, PF Chang, Zebra, Upstream, Ruth Chris Steak House, Mortons, The Palm, Firebirds, City Tavern, Hickory Tavern, Harpers, Miro, China Bistro, Fusion, Mickey & Mooches, Tony’s Pizza, BackYard Burgers, Five Guys Burgers, Dean & Deluca, Starbucks, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, On the Border, Pei Wei Asian Diner, Long Horns, Outback, and many others.
Recreation
The Ballantyne area is home to several fine golf courses both daily fee and private. Recreation can also be found throughout the area at local county parks and green ways. The ever expanding Ballantyne Morrison YMCA facility offers two locations one at Ballantyne Village serves area residents with a fitness center while the main location which shares 100 acres with the county parks department has a state-of-the-art workout facility, expansive “Water Park” and offers several programs focus on individual or family needs.
Located throughout the Ballantyne Corporate Park is an extensive walking trail featuring pocket parks, a fitness
trail and putting green. All of these amenities are available to local residents.
Minutes away are the Carolwinds amusement park, the Ann Springs Close Green way with 1,200 acre and 30 miles of walking trails and the US National Whitewater Center the largest of its kind in the world. Uptown the Bank of America Stadium is home to our Carolina Panthers while the Bobcats play at the Charlotte Arena.
Desirable Communities
There is a wide range of residential housing available throughout the area covering a wide range of prices. They include apartments, condominiums, town homes, stylish cottage homes, large residential communities some of which offer amenities, multi-million dollar estates and country club golf course homes.

The area offers a range of apartment communities most of which offer upscale amenities like clubhouses, pools, media center, and expansive exercise facilities.

There is a diversity of communities from starter type communities to more upscale ones offering more elegant features and upgrades.
Single Family Homes
The Ballantyne area offers a wide range of single family home communities from mature and well established to those that are still being built.
A measure of Ballantyne’s impact has been the expanding growth of developments not only in the area but also into Union County and Lancaster County in South Carolina.
While many of the homes within the area are in the upper price range like those in Kensington there are still several communities where first time home buyers can find opportunity like Ballantyne Meadows with its cottage homes.
Swim & Tennis Communities
Within the area there are several communities that have amenities which are exclusive to the communities residents. One of these, Thornhill is located at Ballantyne on Ballantyne Commons Parkway. Some of its homes directly adjoin the Ballantyne Resort Golf Course. This matured treed community of cul-de-sac streets has a stacked stone clubhouse pavilion, adults and kids pools, tennis courts, playground, picnic area, private lake with its own island and a 20+ acre county historic park.
Country Club / Golf Course Communities
The South Charlotte Ballantyne area is noted for having some of the most beautiful and desirable golf course communities in all of Charlotte. There is Ballantyne Country Club, Piper Glen Country Club, Providence Country Club, Raintree Country Club, Firethorne Country Club and Longview Country Club.
Excellent Schools
There are a number of new public schools presently serving this area. All of the areas schools are in the top ranking for the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. In addition there are a number of private schools available including the prestigious British American School of Charlotte.
Health Care
This area is serviced by two hospitals, which are only minutes away off of I-485. Presbyterian South is located on highway 51 in Matthews. Carolina Medical Center is located on Highway 51 in nearby Pineville. Throughout the area there several medical office parks and more are being built.

As currently zoned the park will have 5 million square feet. Of this just over 3 million square feet is leased. In addition to the office buildings the park also has within its grounds numerous pocket parks, a putting green, fitness trail, expansive walking trail, banks, retail service shops, several restaurants, a day care, a StayBridge Suites and Marriott Courtyard.
Ballantyne Corporate Park is home to businesses like the Lance Company, Permier Inc., Carolina Premier Bank, UBS, Henricks Corporation, Lending Tree, Pinkerton, EXPN, SFX, Household Finance Corporation, Kimberly Clark, Hartford Fire Insurance and Bank of America which recently became the parks largest tenant to name just a few.
Toringdon
Just north of Ballantyne Corporate is Toringdon which offers 700,000 square feet, two shopping center and a large apartment complex and to be developed residential townhomes.
Blakeney
Within a few minutes of Ballantyne on Rea Road is Blakeney a large master plan project offering even more office space, apartments and two large retail centers.
